Yengorboy on GoogleMapsYengorboy is the village with the whole population about 500 people almost on the border with Mongolia and even more exotic than Mikhaylovka.
Yengorboy is a totally Buryat village. Even if a Slavic Russian from the nearest town (who was born and grew up and spent all his or her life in Buryatia) comes there everybody stares: Who is it?. The village is so small that everybody knows each other. There live only Buryats.
They all speak Russian: because of the media, TV which is all in Russian, etc. but they dont use it in everyday communication. If you know Russian and ud ask somebody in Russian you will get the answer. But these people speak Buryat. Ant this is the other reason why the children have problems with getting higher education. They use and study Russian only during some couple of hours per day at school. Russian IS a foreign language for them! But as far as they live in Russia when they head to the capital town of Buryatia - Ulan-Ude they have to pass the entry exams in Russian and they fail it cause they are not competitive to other children. They write with mistakes, etc. It makes getting the higher education for them even more difficult...
The aim of the Volunteer summer school in Buryatia 2009 is on the one hand to promote higher education among local children, to show them that education is the way to make change in their lives and life of their homeland.
On the other hand I hope that coming as a volunteer to such a place will also broaden your mind.
And this is the main idea of the School - Make change - educate yourself and others.
